How to apply to paleoCAMP

Student applications are open for 2025!

Applications are now open for the 2025 paleoCAMP! To apply, you will need to:

  1. Fill out a student application form

  2. Upload a CV (part of the student application form)

  3. Designate a mentor to fill out a recommendation form

All of these pieces are required for your application to be complete. Applications and recommendations are due on or before January 10, 2025.

Eligibility

To participate in paleoCAMP, you must be actively enrolled in a degree-granting graduate program in an Earth science discipline (e.g., geology, geography, atmospheric sciences, oceanography, climate science). Both Masters and PhD students are welcome to apply, but we recommend that you have at least one year of graduate study completed before participating in the camp. Due to budgetary restrictions, we can only accommodate a small number of international participants at this time and priority will be given to US-based applicants. US citizenship/permanent residency is not required.

The 2025 paleoCAMP will be held at the Sierra Nevada Aquatic Research Laboratory, a University of California facility from June 16-30.

Student Application

Please fill out each of the fields in the application. Question 4 asks you to upload a concise CV (as a pdf). There is no required format, but include your educational history; your anticipated completion date for your degree; research experience; a list of your technical skills; and a list of leadership, service, and/or outreach activities. Your file must be less than 10 MB.

Questions 5 - 9 are designed to give us a holistic sense of you as a student. Please use 1-2 concise paragraphs to answer these questions (there is a 2000 character limit). You may want to draft your responses in a separate document and then paste them into the Google Form.

In order to mitigate bias, our first round of review of the applications is blinded (names and institutions are withheld). To facilitate this process, refrain from providing your name, your advisor’s name, your institution, or other identifying information in your answers to Questions 5 - 9. In our second record of review, we unblind information to ensure that the student group is diverse and represents a number of different institutions.

Recommendation form

You will need to contact one mentor to submit a recommendation form. The recommender does not necessarily need to be your primary adviser, but should be from someone who is familiar with your research and can comment on your qualifications in sufficient detail. The form has specific prompts that your recommender must fill out; long-form pdf or word document letters are not accepted. You are responsible for making sure your recommender fills this form out on time.
