Frequently Asked Questions

Where and when is paleoCAMP held?

paleoCAMP is two weeks long, and occurs in the summer at rotating locations in the American West including University-sponsored field stations. The field stations have basic amenities (bunk beds, shared bathrooms, communal kitchens, internet, heat, and A/C). paleoCAMP will organize transport to the stations from nearby airports.

2024 paleoCAMP will be held at the Sierra Nevada Aquatic Research Laboratory, located in the eastern Sierra mountains in California, from June 18-July 1.

How much does it cost?

Lodging, airfare (domestic + North American origin), group transport to the camp site, and meals on site are all covered by paleoCAMP. At the moment, we have a limited capacity to support overseas international airfare. We still encourage overseas students to apply, but we may not be able to cover international travel. We also cannot cover taxi, Uber, Lyft, or baggage costs.

How many students will be at the camp?

Approximately 25 students, depending on the limitations of the field station where the camp is held.

What’s the format?

paleoCAMP features a mixture of lectures, tutorials and hands-on activities, field learning, and professional development. See our curriculum page for an overview of the content.

Do I need any special gear to participate?

No! You will need a laptop computer with internet capability, but we will have some extras if you don’t have one. You will not need camping gear. We are committed to providing an accessible experience so field-based activities are chosen with this in mind. Field trips will vary each year based on the location of the school and we will provide you with information about the trips ahead of time.
